It is often believed that the Renault's first front-wheel drive was the Renault 4 (ref Heller 80759) launched in 1961. It's not true. This is the 1959 Estafette utility vehicle. The French competitors at the time were the Peugeot D3A/D4B and the Citroën Type H (ref Heller 80768). In Germany, VW offered the rear-engined Combi. Ford had the Taunus-Transit with an aesthetic very similar to that of the Estafette, but with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. The Estafette will take over from Citroën the front wheel drive with a large flat load floor, the four independent wheels, the sliding side door and the rear door with three wings. It was initially produced as a van with an 800 kg payload, then a 1000 kg van from 1965, with a flat or raised roof and a short or long wheelbase. Produced until 1980 with more than 500,000 copies, L'Estafette became a symbol of
its time.
